Here is what we did!

We divided what we did into different parts. Because we did this for research purposes, your step may look different than what we did. It is completely okay to make modifications in the process or doing them in different orders.

  • Research the parties that you need to contact to check if the project is allowed

  • Ask the parties for permission (the resources page has outreach templates)

  • See if partnership can be formed with those parties (have them help out with the bins too)

  • We reached out to the department of residential life and the managers of on campus apartments for permission to place bins in their lobbies. This resulted in a partnership between us and the Sustainability coordinator for residential life!

  • Purchase the necessary supplies (the resources page contains them)

  •  Draft up marketing plans (the resources page has social media post  templates)

  • Create a budget document to record expenditure

  • Determine where to place the collection bins

  • Place bins in the pre-determined locations

  • We placed bins in the lobbies of all residential hall communities and on campus apartments. Try to place your bins in the most convenient and accessible places for members of your community.

  • Share created flyers and other marketing plans to increase awareness and engagement

  •  Ask other people and organizations to spread the word

  • Decide frequency and collector of each pick-up (we did it biweekly)

  • Determine the location(s) that will be used to hold clothes (spare room, storage unit, etc)

  • We rented a storage unit in a nearby Extra Space Storage facility.

  • Figure out transportation to/from bins and storage

  • We found the on-campus costume shop for the University's theatre program had a sizable collection of old costumes they were going to throw out. Instead, we offered to pick up all of those costumes and discard of them sustainably. Try to seek out similar organizations that may otherwise be throwing away large quantities of clothes!

  • Record the types of items you collect in a log if that data is of interest (resources page has our log)

  • Donate to community members and local charities (resources page lists some charities)

  • Send un-wearble pieces to get recycled or/and upcycled at recycling plants (resources page lists some recycling plants)
